A presentation of special editions

29 June - 31 July 2023

With a vibrant range of limited print editions, DARLINGS is pleased to present an exhibition across our New York and Sydney spaces that explores the different ways in which we express our senses of place and personhood.

As Alexandra Jonscher colourfully abstracts her own portrait in a digital flurry of brushstrokes and selfie pixels, Corey Black's digital manipulations merge organic matter and technological processes. While Jonscher and Black create forms that consider the impact of technology upon our sense of self, painter Lyla Dushas weaves together surrealist scenes that encapsulate mixtures of sense memories to places to which she is still connected, but physically distant.

Though contrasting in media and technique, Gregory Uzelac and Dean Qiulin Li's works provide glimpses of the ways that identity is informed by space, both public and private. Li's documentation of the intimate minutia of social gatherings give us raw, sardonic, but joyful windows into the human spirit. Meanwhile, Uzelac's mythic vistas utilize the tools of his upbringing in New York in the 90s to realize locations that exist somewhere between imagination and memory. Similarly, Joshua Heath plays with naiveté and nostalgia to represent the ideals which we internalize from our heroic figures.

These works serve as looking glasses, putting into perspective the different sensations, tools, ideals, and memories with which we form our sense of connectivity in our (ironically) disconnected present.

The foundation of Dushas's work has developed from a nomadic lifestyle, encompassing observations that are formed by navigating transient relationships through the intuitive nature of adventure. Engaging with large-scale figures from life and imagination, meshing both domestic with exterior worlds, Dushas gives form to the surreality of closeness to people, places, and things that are not physically present.

Dushas is a graduate of the National Art School in Sydney, Australia and her work now lives in private collections in Australia, Hong Kong, and New York.
